Hematology can be defined as a science dealing with the study and function of blood in normal and diseased situations.

"Hematology" comes from the Greek words haima, meaning blood, and logos, meaning study or science. So, hematology is the science of blood.

What are the branches of science related to hematology?

Hematology consists of collective works of a number of science’ branches related to blood and blood generating organs. For example, this group includes adult and pediatric hematologists, internal medicine specialists, pediatric specialists, biochemists, immunologists, physiologists, pathologists, laboratory professionals, anthropologists, taxonomists...

At the same time, hematology also includes the etiology, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and prevention of hematologic diseases.

Who can be hematologist in Turkey?

In Turkey, after completing a residency program in either internal medicine or pediatrics, hematology expertise requires a further 3-year second training. This expertise is generally called “subspecialty”. In our universities, hematology gives service under “science branches” which are affiliated to main branches of internal diseases or pediatrics. At the same time, the hematology specialists work both at the private sector and at the Ministry of Health.
